Tribune-Star/Jim Avelis Inside: The kilns at Colonial Brick typically last 20-30 years, then need to be rebuilt. A very sticky mortar allows the bricks to be placed without a support structure. Each course is locked into place with a wedge shaped brick. The ceilings of each kiln are about 20 feet high, allowing some 60,000-70,000 bricks to be fired at a time.
