MET 071716 FLOWER FIELD WIDE
Tribune-Star/Austen Leake
Best-looking maze around: It started as a way to harvest sunflower seeds to use in birdseed, without knowing how well they would grow on their land. Once the flowers started blooming last season, Brian Lau of L&A Family Farms knew they had to share the field with their customers. The maze is less about a brain-teasing challenge and more about enjoying the wonderful atmosphere of being in a massive field of sunflowers in bloom; however, there are a few tricky dead ends. The maze generally takes customers around 30 minutes. L&A Family Farms’ storefront sells all the in-season produce and meat the farm yields. The store has extended its hours during the full bloom to let more people enjoy the sunflower maze. They will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The maze is $3 per person and children 5 and under are free.
