Tribune-Star/Austen Leake
Picking the president: Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary School in West Terre Haute held its own election on Tuesday. Students voted for the candidate they preferred in the library throughout the day but not before the candidates were able to make their case for votes. Donald Trump (played by 5th grader Cameron Hellmann) and Hillary Clinton (played by 5th grader Emma Rollings) each gave a statment outlining their core positions on the issues. They weren't alone though, Mitt Romney (5th grader Grayson Porter), President Barack Obama (5th grader Chandler Wetzel), Tim Kaine (4th grader Jayce Noblitt) were there as well. Mike Pence (4th grader Christian Beattie) was sick and couldn't make it to the event. Meliania Trump (4th grader Arianna Bahr) and Bill Clinton (4th grader William Marrs) accompanied the candidates to the stage. The third graders were tasked with the job of being secret service members. Sean Matherly, Bronson Thralls, Bailey Miller, and Lily Krause. After the statements were made by each candidate, some students cheered and others chose to boo. Thats when teacher Cari Beattie decided to chime in. She talked about respecting each others political opinion and told the students to root for their own candidate rather than cheer against someone elses. After the day was over Donald Trump won 161 to 131 votes for Hillary Clinton.
